Nursing Home Costs

Home Page Nursing Home Care Nursing Home Costs Tips On Choosing A Nursing Home   In general you can either pay for all the nursing home fees yourself or you can go through your local authority and apply for financial help to pay for the nursing home fees. If you choose a private nursing home, it is likely you will have to pay the entire cost yourself, however you are still entitled to apply for funding, as local authorities now offer money for people moving into private, charitable and council-run nursing homes.

The majority of nursing homes enter into a contract with the social services and the local NHS Trust to agree a price for all nursing home residents. Prices vary between nursing homes, and in some cases the local authority will only agree to pay a certain amount of the costs, with you or a relative having to fund the rest. This is known as the ‘third party top-up amount’, and you must continuing paying this for the duration of your stay in the nursing home.

When you apply to the local council for help towards nursing home costs, the authority will make a financial assessment to work out how much you have to pay towards the cost of staying in a nursing home and how much the authority will pay. You must agree to this amount before you can move into the nursing home.

Whether you pay the entire nursing home fee yourself or win funding from the local authority, the fees you pay to stay in the nursing home usually includes personal care, accommodation, food and drink, laundry, heating, furniture and lighting.
